MacBook Battery Replacement Basics for Repair Shops

Why MacBook batteries are a different job

An iPhone battery is one cell under a screen. A MacBook battery is a pack of four to six flat cells glued to the top case, wired through a single board with its own gauge chip, and sitting next to the trackpad cable and speakers. The work is not harder than a phone, but it is slower, the adhesive is stronger and the energy stored is ten to twenty times greater. Treat the pack with the respect a 50 to 100 Wh lithium block deserves.

Step one: identify the battery by A-number

The laptop’s model number (A2337, A2442 and so on) is printed on the underside near the regulatory text. The battery has its own A-number, printed on the pack, and the two are not the same. Apple does not publish a mapping, so shops rely on teardown and vendor data. Our catalogue lists batteries by battery A-number with the laptops they fit; the table below covers the models most often brought in.

Battery Fits Note
A1496 MacBook Air 13″ A1466, 2013 to 2017 Also fits 2011 to 2012 physically
A1965 MacBook Air 13″ Retina A1932 (2018, 2019), A2179 (2020 Intel)
A2389 MacBook Air 13″ A2337 (M1, 2020)
A2669 MacBook Air 13″ A2681 (M2), A3113 (M3) M3 fit per vendor data
A2171 MacBook Pro 13″ A2159, A2289, A2338 (M1) Not for 4-port A1989 or A2251
A2519 MacBook Pro 14″ A2442, A2779, A2918 Not interchangeable with 16-inch A2527
A2527 MacBook Pro 16″ A2485, A2780
A2113 MacBook Pro 16″ A2141 (2019) 99.8 Wh

Two-port and four-port 13-inch Pro models from the same year use different batteries, and so do 14-inch and 16-inch. When in doubt, read the A-number off the old pack before ordering from MacBook Batteries.

Step two: prepare the machine

  • Run the battery down to under 25 percent. A pack with less stored energy is safer if a cell is nicked during removal.
  • Shut down fully, unplug, wait ten minutes. Modern MacBooks keep logic powered for a while after shutdown.
  • Remove the bottom case: P5 pentalobe screws on all current Air and Pro models. Note the screw lengths; they differ by position.
  • Disconnect the battery connector first. On M-series machines it is a press-in connector held by a bracket; on 2016 to 2020 Intel Pros, the board sits under a cover with Torx T3 or T5 screws.
  • Only then touch anything else: trackpad cable, speakers, audio board, whichever sits over the cells.

Step three: removing the old pack

Most packs since 2012 use stretch-release adhesive strips. Pull each tab slowly and flat, at a low angle; a strip that snaps leaves you with solvent work. If the tabs are gone or the strips break, use isopropyl alcohol or a dedicated adhesive remover under the cell edge, wait a minute, and lift with a plastic card. Never use a metal pry tool or a heat gun on the cells. Work one cell at a time and keep the lifted cell flat; bending a cell is as dangerous as puncturing it.

On 2016 to 2019 Touch Bar Pros, the battery and trackpad are adhered together and the official method is a liquid adhesive remover injected under the cells. Budget an hour for those. On M-series Air and 14 and 16-inch Pro models the pull-tab design is cooperative and the whole job is 30 to 45 minutes.

Step four: fitting the new pack

  • Clean the top case of old adhesive and dust. The new pack must sit flat; a crumb under a cell becomes a pressure point.
  • Peel the liner, align the pack by the screw holes, press each cell lightly.
  • Reconnect the battery last, after speakers, trackpad cable and covers are back.
  • Replace the speaker adhesive on models where you lifted them.

Step five: calibration and what macOS shows

Charge to 100 percent, keep the charger on for two hours, then run the machine on battery until it sleeps, leave it off for five hours and charge fully again. This settles the gauge chip. After that, System Settings, Battery shows the health; System Information, Power shows cycle count and condition. A new pack shows a low cycle count and Normal condition. An aftermarket pack is not reported as a service item in macOS the way iOS does on iPhone, but some M-series machines show a note under Battery about an unrecognised battery for a few boots. Explain this to the customer in advance.

Grades and what to expect

We sell new aftermarket packs and tested original pulls. Aftermarket packs match the rated Wh of the original within a few percent and usually come with the strips pre-installed. Pulls show their real cycle count; we list it. See our grades guide and the notes in each listing. Tools for the job, including P5 and T5 drivers, cards and adhesive remover, are under Screwdrivers, Tweezers and Kits.

Safety note

A swollen MacBook battery is the most common reason for this repair and the most dangerous moment of it. Do not press the trackpad or the lid on a swollen machine, do not charge it, and do not store it indoors overnight before the job. Remove the pack on a non-flammable surface with a bucket of sand and a Class D or ABC extinguisher in reach, and keep the old pack in a metal container until it goes to a recycler. If a cell starts to smoke, move it outside; do not try to put it out with water on the bench.

FAQ

How long does a MacBook battery replacement take?

Thirty to forty-five minutes on M-series Air and 14 and 16-inch Pro. Up to two hours on 2016 to 2019 Touch Bar Pros because of the solvent work.

Will macOS show a warning about a replacement battery?

Not a persistent one like iOS. Some machines show a temporary note; cycle count and condition read normally after calibration.

Can I reuse the old adhesive strips?

No. Fit the strips that come with the new pack or buy them separately.

The new battery shows 0 percent and will not charge.

Check the connector is fully seated and the bracket screw is in. A pack shipped deeply discharged may need a few minutes on the charger before the gauge wakes.
