How to Replace an iPhone Charging Port Flex Cable

Diagnose before you open

Most phones brought in for a charging port do not need one. Before quoting the job, run through this list:

  • Shine a light into the port. Lint packed at the bottom is the single most common cause of a cable that will not click in. Clean it with a wooden or plastic pick, never metal.
  • Try a known-good cable and charger. Check the phone with a USB power meter: an iPhone that pulls 1 A or more is charging; one at 0 A with a clean port has a port or board fault.
  • Test wireless charging. If MagSafe or Qi works and the port does not, the port flex is the likely cause. If neither works, suspect the charging IC on the board, not the port.
  • Check data: connect to a computer. A port that charges but does not sync usually has worn data pins and still needs the flex.

The charging port flex also carries the main microphone, and on most models the cellular antenna feed and the Lightning or USB-C connector housing. Symptoms that point at the same part: the other person cannot hear you on calls (but speakerphone works), and weak signal after liquid damage.

Lightning or USB-C

iPhone 7 through iPhone 14 series use Lightning. iPhone 15 and later use USB-C; the 15 and 16 base models and the 17 and 17 Air run at USB 2 speeds, the 15 Pro, 16 Pro and 17 Pro models at USB 3 (10 Gb/s). The flex is model-specific in every case, and colour-matched to the housing: order the flex in the colour of the phone’s frame, since the connector surround is visible from outside. Flex cables are listed per model in iPhone Parts, for example iPhone 16 / 16e.

What you need

  • Pentalobe 0.8 mm, Phillips PH000, Tri-Point Y0.6 and standoff drivers; Torx T5 for the iPhone 17 series. All in Screwdrivers, Tweezers & Kits.
  • A magnetic screw mat or organizer: this job has the most screws of different lengths of any iPhone repair.
  • Heat mat, pry tools, spudger, tweezers, isopropyl alcohol and new screen adhesive.
  • Optionally, a hot air station at low temperature for the adhesive under the flex on 12 and later.

Step by step

  • Open the phone. Remove the screen as in the screen guide. Disconnect the battery first, then the display. On models where the back glass is removable (iPhone 14, 14 Plus, 15, 15 Plus, 16 series), work from the back instead; the port is reachable without touching the screen.
  • Remove the loudspeaker and taptic engine. The loudspeaker sits over the port on nearly all models; the Taptic Engine is beside it. Note screw positions; the loudspeaker usually has two or three different lengths.
  • Disconnect the flex. The port flex connector is near the battery connector on most models and under a bracket. Unplug it and any antenna coaxial cables routed over it (press straight down to disconnect, lift straight up to reconnect).
  • Remove the port screws. Two screws hold the connector at the bottom edge on older models; on 12 and later there are also brackets along the flex path. Remove the SIM tray if present.
  • Lift the flex. It is glued along its length. Warm the back of the phone to about 60 °C and peel slowly with a spudger starting from the connector end. Keep the tweezers away from the battery.
  • Fit the new flex. Lay it in exactly the same path, route the antenna cables over or under it as the original was, and fit the connector housing screws first so the port lines up with the frame opening. Check from outside that the port is centred before tightening.
  • Reassemble. Taptic Engine, loudspeaker, brackets, display, battery last.

Test before sealing

  • Wired charging with a power meter: current should match a known-good phone of the same model.
  • Data sync to a computer.
  • A call with the phone at the ear and a voice memo: both use the bottom microphone.
  • Cellular signal bars compared with before the repair, since the antenna feed runs through the flex on many models.
  • On iPhone 15 Pro and later with USB 3, a transfer to an external drive to confirm full speed.

Model notes

Model group Access Notes
iPhone 7, 8, SE From the front Lightning; flex includes mic and antenna; many brackets
iPhone X to 11 Pro Max From the front Flex runs the full length of the phone on X/XS; longest removal
iPhone 12, 13 series From the front Lightning; flex glued along the frame, two antenna cables over it
iPhone 14, 14 Plus, 15, 15 Plus, 16 series From the back Back glass opens; port accessible without removing the screen
iPhone 15 Pro, 16 Pro, 17 series From the front USB-C, USB 3 on Pro; Torx T5 on 17 series; port surround colour matched

Safety

  • The port flex runs beside the battery on every model. A slipped pry tool or tweezers can puncture the cell. Disconnect the battery and keep the tool angle flat.
  • Keep heat under 70 °C and away from the cell.
  • Protect the Face ID flex and the camera glass when the loudspeaker is out; both are exposed on some models.

Flex cables ship from China; wholesale tiers apply for shops after approval.

FAQ

The phone charges wirelessly but not by cable. Is it the port?

Usually, yes, after you have cleaned the port and tried another cable. If a new flex does not fix it, the charging IC on the board is the next suspect.

Does the new flex restore the original water resistance?

No. Even with new screen adhesive the seal is reduced after any repair. Tell the customer.

Why does the new port not fit the frame opening?

Either the housing screws were tightened before the connector was aligned, or the flex is for a different model. Loosen, align from outside, retighten.

Can I swap a Lightning port for USB-C?

No. The board, the housing and the flex are different; there is no drop-in conversion we would sell.

Which colour should I order?

The colour of the frame around the port, visible from outside. The listing names match the Apple colour names for that model.
